If your period is late or you’re experiencing symptoms like nausea and fatigue, you might be wondering when you should take a pregnancy test.
Knowing when to take a pregnancy test is crucial, as timing can significantly impact the accuracy of your results. Waiting until after a missed period can help you get an accurate result; however, there are also other factors to consider.
Hope Pregnancy Center can help provide clarity during this time. We offer free pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds to confirm your pregnancy and provide important medical details about how your pregnancy is developing.
You do not have to figure this out alone. Schedule an appointment today.
The Right Time to Take a Pregnancy Test
It is recommended to wait one to two days after a missed period to take a pregnancy test. If you have irregular cycles, waiting about four weeks after intercourse generally allows enough time for hCG levels to become detectable.
Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone begins to rise after implantation and typically doubles about every 48 to 72 hours during early pregnancy.
If you feel unsure about your test result, we can help with accurate pregnancy testing at our center to confirm your pregnancy.
Early Signs of Pregnancy
Every woman experiences pregnancy differently. Some common early pregnancy symptoms include:
- Sore or swollen breasts
- A missed period
- Fatigue
- Morning sickness
- Frequent urination
Can I Get a False Negative?
A false negative can happen if you take a pregnancy test too early, before hCG levels have risen enough to be detected
Other factors that can affect your results include not following the test instructions carefully, using an expired test, or testing later in the day when your urine is more diluted from drinking fluids. It is best to take a pregnancy test with the first morning urine to avoid this.
Why an Ultrasound Is Important
A positive pregnancy test is an important first step, but it does not tell you everything you need to know about your pregnancy, including how far along the pregnancy is, the location of the pregnancy, and whether the pregnancy appears viable.
A limited obstetrical ultrasound can provide this information and help identify conditions such as miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy that require medical attention and can affect your pregnancy options.
