Common Early Signs of Pregnancy

Many early pregnancy symptoms are caused by hormonal changes after conception. While these signs don’t confirm pregnancy on their own, they can be helpful indicators to pay attention to:

  • Missed period: Often one of the first and most noticeable signs, especially if your cycle is usually regular
  • Nausea or vomiting: Commonly called “morning sickness,” though it can occur at any time of day and may begin as early as 6 to 9 weeks
  • Fatigue: Rising progesterone levels and increased blood production can cause unusual tiredness
  • Breast changes: Tenderness, swelling, or darkening of the areolas may occur early on
  • Frequent urination: Increased blood flow causes the kidneys to process more fluid
  • Mood changes: Hormonal shifts can affect emotions, leading to irritability or emotional sensitivity
  • Food cravings or aversions: Certain smells or tastes may suddenly become appealing or unpleasant
  • Light spotting or cramping: Sometimes referred to as implantation bleeding
  • Nasal congestion: Increased blood volume can cause the nasal passages to swell, dry out, or bleed more easily
  • Bloating or constipation: Hormonal changes can slow digestion, leading to bloating similar to what some experience before a period

Why Testing Matters

Timing matters. Testing too early can result in a false negative if human chorionic gonadatropin (hCG) levels aren’t high enough yet. If a test is negative but symptoms continue, retesting after a few days may provide clearer results.

Pregnancy symptoms can overlap with other conditions, such as stress, illness, or hormonal changes. Because of this, symptoms alone can’t confirm pregnancy. The only way to know for sure is with a pregnancy test, confirmed with an ultrasound scan.

If a pregnancy test is positive, anultrasound can provide additional important information, such as how far along the pregnancy is, whether it is developing in the uterus (not ectopic), and confirm viability, meaning whether the pregnancy is developing or a miscarriage has occurred. This information is important for your health and helps clarify what next steps are available.
