A <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/21899-medical-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medical abortion<\/a> is FDA-approved through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/information-about-mifepristone-medical-termination-pregnancy-through-ten-weeks-gestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ten weeks<\/a> of gestation and works by using two drugs. The first drug is called <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a600042.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mifepristone<\/a>. It blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed for the pregnancy to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second drug, <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a689009.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misoprostol<\/a>, is taken 24\u201348 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through cramping and heavy vaginal bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/dilation-and-curettage\/about\/pac-20384910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surgical abortion<\/a> is is performed in a clinic, surgical center, or hospital. After dilating the cervix, the abortion provider uses suction or, depending on the method and gestational age, a combination of suction and scraping with a curette to remove the pregnancy and related tissue from the uterus.
