Verify Your Pregnancy with Ultrasound<\/h2>

<\/p>

<\/p>

It is important to verify your pregnancy with an ultrasound. The ultrasound will evaluate 3 important aspects of the pregnancy:<\/p>

<\/p>

<\/p>

    1. Determine if the pregnancy is inside the uterus. A pregnancy outside of the uterus is a life-threatening situation which requires immediate medical attention.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>

      <\/p>

      <\/p>

        1. Determine how far along the pregnancy is and the gestational age of the fetus.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>

          <\/p>

          <\/p>

            1. Look for signs of viability, including baby\u2019s heartbeat.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              What is obstetrical ultrasound?<\/h3>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              An ultrasound, or sonogram, is a routine part of prenatal care in which the sonographer is able to see inside the body. A hand-held transducer is pressed against the skin and sends high-pitched sound waves that humans are unable to hear. The sound waves bounce off internal organs and structures and are received by the transducer. The machine constantly translates the sound waves into images on the monitor. This allows real-time viewing of what is happening inside the body, including viewing of fetal heartbeat and movements.<\/p>

              What Can I Expect Before, During, and After the Procedure?<\/h3>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              There is no special preparation for your ultrasound exam. A specially trained sonographer will ask you a few questions relating to your pregnancy before the exam begins.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Most ultrasounds are fast and easy, with little discomfort.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              After you are positioned on the examination table, the sonographer will apply some warm gel on your skin. The transducer will be held firmly against your skin and moved back and forth over your lower abdomen until the desired images are captured.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Often in early pregnancy, a vaginal ultrasound is performed to obtain clearer images. A protective cover is placed over a special transducer and lubricated with a small amount of gel. The transducer is inserted into the vagina by the examiner, or you may be asked to insert it as you would a tampon. The sonographer will then obtain the desired images.<\/p>

              The pictures and report will then be reviewed by our medical doctor.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              After an ultrasound exam, you should be able to resume your normal activities immediately.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Is Ultrasound Safe?<\/h4>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              There are no known harmful effects associated with the medical use of ultrasound. According to the\u00a0FDA<\/a>, Ultrasound imaging has been used for over 20 years and has an excellent safety record. It is based on non-ionizing radiation, so it does not have the same risks as X-rays or other types of imaging systems that use ionizing radiation.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              The\u00a0American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, an association of physicians, sonographers, scientists, and engineers, has a Bio-effects Committee that meets regularly to consider the bio-effects and safety of ultrasound. They have adopted the following statement:<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              \u201cThere are no known harmful effects associated with the medical use of sonography. Widespread clinical use of diagnostic ultrasound for many years has not revealed any harmful effects. Studies in humans have revealed no direct link between the use of diagnostic ultrasound and any adverse outcome. Although the possibility exists that biological effects may be identified in the future, current information indicates that the benefits to patients far outweigh the risks, if any.\u201d<\/p>

              All the HOPE Center services are free of charge.<\/p>

              Q. How long is the appointment?<\/a><\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Approximately 45-60 minutes to allow you to ask questions and understand your options.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Q. I am 16. Does a parent have to come with me for my appointment?<\/a><\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              No, you may come in to the HOPE center alone or with a friend. Even though you are a minor, you have the right to confidential help, except in those cases where mandatory reporting applies, such as suicide risk. We will not provide your records to any person without written authorization from you.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Q. Can I just come in whenever, or do I need an appointment?<\/a><\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              The HOPE Center wants to make sure we have a special time set aside to talk with you, so it\u2019s usually best to have an appointment. However, if you are unable to make an appointment, you may walk in Monday \u2013 Friday between 9:00 \u2013 5:00 pm.<\/p>

              Q. Can I bring someone with me?<\/a><\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Yes! It\u2019s important to have the support of friends or family during an uncertain time.<\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Q. Will the HOPE Center tell anyone that I came in for a pregnancy test?<\/a><\/p>

              <\/p>

              <\/p>

              Any and all information shared with the HOPE Center will be kept in the strictest confidence except as required by Pennsylvania law or as required for the protection of yourself or others. You don\u2019t have to worry if your family or friends will find out. We\u2019ll do everything we can to protect your privacy.<\/p>
